7:20 p.m. Animation section
We will be screening shorts from two animators: Michael Dudok de Wit and Don
Hertzfeldt.
Michael Dudok de Wit's "Father and Daughter" is an animated short that
starts with a father saying good-bye to his young daughter. As the wide Dutch
landscapes live through their seasons, so the girl lives through hers, always
longing for her father. This 2001 Academy Award -winning film was made with
pencil and charcoal. Michael's next film "The Monk and the Fish" finds
the two animated characters near the water reservoir by a monastery. The monk
becomes obsessed with the fish and tries everything to catch it. Gradually the
story becomes more symbolic.
Don Hertzfeldt, a native California animator, has gathered 95 awards, four grand
prizes, Oscar nominations, and a rather spooky cult following. We are currently
trying to book five of his animated shorts: "ah, l'amour",
"lilly
and jim", "billy's balloon", "genre" and
"rejected"
(awarded Best Animation).
